As the big sister of someone with Down syndrome, I have spent much of my life anticipating genetic deviations, random diseases, epidemics and pandemics. For more than a decade, I have been making images of the rogue 47th chromosome (Trisomy 21), toxic molds, food borne bacteria, zoonoses (diseases, like avian flu, that are transmitted from animals to humans) and STDs. I think about these things. I think about them a lot. Instead of wallowing in my worry and apprehension, I am compelled to express these health issues as beautiful and palatable, even funny. For me, time spent in the studio is far more than therapy. It is more along the lines of personal hygiene essential to my wellbeing. If I seem normal to you, then it is working. |
