Downpour of Fantasy
Mixed media on wood panel, 24x36", ©2001

For a long time I have been drawn to the incredible variations of surfaces. Be they natural or man-made and altered by the elements, surfaces engage my imagination.

Tree bark, rusted metal, pitted boulders, pealing paint, protruding veins on leaves or beneath people's skin, backs of sea shells, rock surfaces, coral bones, seed pod coverings, insect skins, sheet metals, eroding walls, rotted or decayed matter, oil drips, puddle skins of various liquids, and fossils are some of my sources of inspiration.

I do not allude to these sources literally, but as they cumulatively affect my sensual awareness. I use color and texture to tempt the viewer's eyes and hands into an exploration of the activity on the surface of the picture plane. I hope this activity will tweak a memory of something previously seen or felt, and thus connect some of my memories to theirs.
