The inspiration for my process is light, as a physical object and as a metaphor light, as in neon, and light as a way out of the darkness. I am intrigued and fascinated by the challenges each of us face, the expectations we put upon ourselves, our family and society, and the struggle to find our way through the maze, and the choices we make in picking the perspective through which we view the world. I interpret my perspective through the use of symbols and textures that express what I am feeling. It could be a personal issue or a reaction to the world around me. Most of the neon tubing in my art is bent free form. Shapes may be similar but each is unique. When starting a new series or project, I bend "practice" tubing until I find a shape I want to explore or a shape that expresses something I have been thinking about. Then the shape is practiced until it can be executed without kinks, pulls, twists, etc.
After the glass is bent, the tubes are positioned and textural elements that will be layered into the piece are selected. These elements capture and reflect the glow from the light. I work with brighter tubing because there is more cast light. Once the tubes are gassed, the textural elements are tested with the neon tubes. Sometimes the composition is reconfigured or the textural elements are altered. The process is fluid. |
