How do we live in harmony with our world at a time when we can alter our environment and ourselves in many irrevocable ways? As an individual, how does one recognize the authentic? We have the desire to belong, to fit in, and yet we also continue to reshape the world to suit our needs. I am particularly interested in the place where natural and man-made intersect. My working technique reflects this interest. I "build" my paintings by including printed pictures (collage) and dimensional, found objects (assemblage). These objects and collaged elements contribute their own connotations and meaning depending on their original use or context. All the elements are integrated with my application of the paint. I think this artistic process mirrors the intruding, constructing, altering, and unifying activities that are a part of living in the world.
My paintings blend aspects of both representation and abstraction. They are narrative but ambiguous; the specific details of the story need to be supplied by the viewer. The various elements in a piece relate to each other the way different images do in a dream. As in Surrealism, perspective and realistic geometry aren't as important as understanding the symbolism and the meaning of the elements. |
