Portfolio Artist Statement ![]() ![]() ![]() My work is a reflection of a deep connection to the natural world, and the damage inflicted upon it by the unchecked growth of the human race. My work in oil explores the tenuous relationship between the geometric and the abstract, as it relates to the environment in which humans live. Having worked as a landscape architect, I have developed a preternatural ability to detect slight changes in plants, flowers and other natural elements within urban areas. I have found slight but troubling mutations in these living objects, which I believe are threatened by continued, uncontrolled development. I use the term "Urban Rainforest" to describe the impetus for my work, as I use the rigidity of human architecture to further illustrate these abstract, but ever-present changes in terrain. Each project begins with a flood of inspiration that becomes fervent, often lasting a month or more. Using cool, muted shades and shocking blocks of color, I attempt to construct an emotional response to a particular place and moment. Many of my pieces display a dark, repellent void, which often represents a part of the natural world that I believe is damaged beyond repair.
In the battle of man versus nature, I am convinced that nature will be the victor. It is just a matter of how this comes to be that truly inspires my painting. My current work continues to emphasize this inevitable but prolonged conclusion. |
