" Steve Galloway's "Bagging Diamonds at Ten Thousand Feet Over Bob's Ranch" is my pick because it reveals new things each time you look at it over time. The forms in "Bagging Diamonds" are realistic but still not quite recognizable, and their juxtaposition is very surreal. It delivers a lot for your imagination to discover. (Archeological ruins? An environment under the sea?)
Also this piece is outstanding because Steve Galloway demonstrates amazing mastery of the pastel medium. This large-size work, 60 x 48 inches, is very vibrant, with skillful drawing that intertwines like a complex 3-D puzzle. And all sorts of textures are beautifully rendered in hyper detail: granite, plastic, rubber, wood, coral, vines, and architectural columns. "Bagging Diamonds" is a feast for your eyes and a trip for your mind.
This piece was exhibited at Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles in 1985. Steve Galloway, recipient of a prestigious NEA Fellowship and an accomplished Los Angeles-based artist, is represented by Rose Gallery in Santa Monica."
