Sara Alavikia has a MFA in painting and a Bachelor’s of Arts in Illustration from California State University of Northridge.
In her mixed media work, Sara Alavikia depicts dichotomies and binary concepts such as above and below, inside and outside, concealed and revealed, colors and monochromes, and abstract and real.
She employs a multi-level collage process that combines the reality of photographs, and the abstraction of painted or blank mylar and paper that is cut and reconfigured. When pieced together, these fragments create a new whole. Conceptually, the process of cutting is destructive but is put back together within the collage to counteract the destruction. Her art considers the paradoxes of life through abstract and real viewpoints both in concept as well as in her technique.
