Los Angeles Art Association is proud to present 4 solo exhibitions by Janine Brown, S.P. Harper, Frederika Roeder and Snezana Saraswati Petrovic. All exhibits launch with a full-day opening reception at Gallery 825 on January 15 from 10am - 5pm. These shows remain on view by appointment through February 18, 2022.

Janine Brown’s The Holiness in the Ordinary is an ongoing video installation project that explores humanity, the differences, and the common denominators between a diverse array of people. For the exhibition at Gallery 825, eighteen participants were asked to create a script using 40-100 statements that describe themselves starting with “I am.” The self-created script gives participants agency over who and what they want to show the viewer. Each person reveals the unique and often contradicting characteristics of their identity. As you listen to the portraits, the “I am” statements become part confessional and part mantra of humanity. The statements from the 18 people have been edited into a 3-Channel video installation. During the exhibition, viewers will have the opportunity to participate in two ways, first, sign up to be filmed on February 17th or 18th with their own "I am" script, or record themselves and post on Instagram and tag @IamWhoIamJBS and #IamWhoIamJBS. As Brown continues to add video portraits to the project, the complexities of identity and the common denominators between people unknown to each other are exposed.  CLICK HERE TO SEE THE INDIVIDUAL VIDEO PORTRAITS OF THE PARTICIPANTS

Eliciting desire. What is it? Who creates it? S. P. Harper answers by focusing on the intersection of rubbish and objects d’art. This exhibition, Natural Force, illustrates how products change from valuable to worthless and re-emerge desirable. Part of eco-centric art, aka neo-materialism, inspired by her diamantaire (diamond cutter) grandfather, Harper sculpts and paints abstract geometrics using reclaimed materials, synthesizing historical and contemporary styles by mixing the classical tradition of still-life with modernism. Through reforming and re-employing elements, her work reduces, re-uses and up-cycles. Applying diverse media such as discarded wallpaper, tablecloth, curtain, metal, plastic and wood fragments, Harper employs various disciplines including MIG welding, circular saw (with diamond blade!), table saw, jigsaw and sewing. Background recycled patterns vanished behind opaque oil paint subtly reappear through transparent gem stone dust and acrylic wash. Gods of Fire have been chosen to represent birthstones arranged in a didactic collection. Eternal flames emerge from the facets of jewels to reflect and transfix. Frederika Roeder’s new body of work is called “Scapes” not “escape”, although the artist hopes that is the response a viewer might have when encountering these paintings. Subconsciously, Roeder’s is doing some of that "escaping" while working on these pieces. Landscape focused, Roeder's work explores many of the overlays of desire and longing for a particular place; attached to both the emotions and the actual narrative. In this grouping much of the underlying content is happiness and joy responding to a particular location. Inspired by the iconic movement of California Light and Space, Roeder approaches the pieces at the onset as a Minimalist. CLICK HERE TO VIEW AND PURCHASE ARTWORK BY FREDERIKA ROEDER

Snezana Saraswati Petrovic’s ambitious installation Collateral Damage Recall focuses on how the impermanence of our own existence is inseparable from this blue island floating in a black, lonely universe. The immersive and interactive aspects of Collateral Damage intend to bring awareness to climate change and the warning signs of unintended destruction of the ocean, coral reefs and water resources through playful interactions with beauty, all arranged in a postapocalyptic plastic-fantastic futuristic installation.  Read more from Diversion LA HERE.
