Making art is a dialog with another. This "other," this object of art, will always have a mind of its own. At times, the two of you are in sync. Things get done. But often, you are at odds with one another, engaged in a subconscious battle that can go on for months. It is a messy way to create, and sometimes it doesn't produce the best results. Still, without this separate and dynamic "other" always pulling at the hand, the work would be without an inner life. Without this life, it would not be art.
