Artist Statement
Richard Holland, fine artist, accesses his film production design skills to inform his personal fine art vision in his growing body of dimensional cutouts artwork.
His “cutout” style (developed as a child creating paper cutout worlds), meticulously painted with carved frames and boxes that work as “sets”, reflects layers of storytelling that bring together his experiences, influences and techniques. The artwork is a visual feast and speaks to Richard’s personal experiences as an Englishman working in the movies, living in America, and consuming vintage American comics and the live action of the American West. The carved picture frames and painted images portray life as scripted worlds, encapsulated in time. The pictures are presented as an elaborate film set where pathways cross and realities unfold before our very eyes; a dynamic world, captured within and outside the box.
