Los Angeles Art Association is proud to present 4 solo exhibitions on June 14 by Joanne Chase Mattillo, Annie Clavel, Gina M and Michelle Robinson. All shows run through July 11, 2024.

Joanne Chase-Mattillo exhibition Stream of Consciousness explores how the best and worst of inner experiences and dialogues are seen. whether wanted or not, by those we meet in social situations. To work through insecurities, affirmations declaring ourselves as the best we can be may improve confidence. Applying dialogue to the portrait images presented in “Stream of Consciousness” displays the thoughts that one might see themselves as who they are. Words are not literally spoken in life, but the concept that how we see ourselves is how others see us is demonstrated by the text applied onto the portraits in this exhibition and reflect the inner dialogue of each subject. The words used in “Stream of Consciousness” are from affirmations the artist has discovered and applied in her daily life.  CLICK HERE TO VIEW AND PURCHASE ARTWORK FROM JOANNE CHASE MATILLO

Annie Clavel’s new exhibit Human History is a testament to the relentless drive to explore the unknown and overcome adversity. Our story is that of humanity. From the formation of tribes to present-day migrations, people have consistently ventured beyond their homelands in search of sustenance and better livelihoods. This exhibition explores how these global movements have shaped our world and continue to do so. By highlighting the transformative impact of migration, it celebrates the courage required to face the unknown and the enduring spirit of hope that propels humanity forward. Gina M. returns to Gallery 825 with The New Normal: Summer School, an immersive installation confronting America’s desensitization to gun violence. Transforming the gallery into a surreal classroom, she invites viewers to experience an unsettling yet eerily familiar environment—primary colors, blinking lights, and playful educational tools—distorted to reveal a darker reality. New works expand upon her signature bait-and-switch approach, drawing audiences in with childhood nostalgia before exposing the insidious ways violence is woven into daily life. The American Alphabet poem reads: “A, begins Assault Rifle, a weapon of war. B, is for Bullet, that shoots through a door.” The chalkboard no longer teaches math but instead displays children’s unspoken fears. A patriotic desk precariously balances a tower of blocks, mirroring a fragile and failing system. Gina M.’s work challenges audiences to reject this new normal, demanding a response rather than complacency. Her background in interior design, color theory, and large-scale public projects informs her immersive sculptural environments. Her work has been exhibited at Gallery 825, Cerritos College Art Gallery, Huntley Gallery, Pomona College, the Irvine Fine Arts Center, MOAH, Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery, and the Orange County Center for Contemporary Art, among others. The New Normal: Summer School turns education into confrontation—forcing viewers to ask, how did we get here, and more importantly, how do we change it? Michelle Robinson’s exhibit An Inventory of Losses grieves losses - those that have already occurred and those still to come, resulting from humankind's impact on the environment. In her work, she practices a form of activist melancholia. Robinson’s is an anti-conciliatory mourning, intended less to heal and more to spur action; to build empathy for non-human bodies and discourage complacency in the face of such tragedies. In recent years Robinson has attended residencies in different ecosystems within the United States, studying how our presence has endangered local plants and animals, encouraged invasive species, and created conditions for catastrophic wildfires. The alteration of our landscape and climate has become overwhelming in its scope; impossible to comprehend. To process what she learned, Robinson focused on individual stories, creating an elegiac visual inventory of small losses representing a greater whole. In response to the devastation, she embroiders tender portraits of dead trees frozen in agonal distress or vulnerable plants in the process of vanishing forever. Robinson makes grave rubbings of trees burned in fires or destroyed by invasive insects. Robinson hand-paints photographs to show what may disappear or document what has already gone. These efforts force her to look, and not turn away from, the impact of numerous losses that may never be restored. CLICK HERE TO VIEW AND PURCHASE ARTWORK FROM MICHELLE ROBINSON
